The “I Need More Customers” Checklist

When business is slow, the problem will be in one of three areas: Awareness, Content or Engagement. The following checklist outlines some basic areas to look in for solutions:

Not enough customers coming through the front door?

This is too broad a question, and you’ll need a little more data to answer it, so start measuring everything you do.

Are you collecting email addresses? Are you getting people to connect with you on social media? Are you advertising? Do you have a good website? Do you blog? Do customers like you?

If you don’t have clear answers or can’t quantify your efforts, you’ll need to put together some steps to generate the data you need to act. Start with awareness, measure results and then review your next steps.

Not enough people visiting your website?

This is a classic symptom with a lack of awareness.  Every business will generate at least some website visitors if people are aware of your business.

Not enough people calling from your website?

If people are visiting your website but aren’t taking the next steps, then the simple answer is that they either don’t like what they see or are confused by what they are seeing.

Not enough people coming back?

If you are getting people into your store but not getting them back, then either their customer experience wasn’t as good as it could be or they are forgetting about your business after leaving.  To solve this problem, you’ll have to reach out to old customers to learn the problems.

Not enough word-of-mouth business?

People aren’t telling their friends about your business because either they didn’t like the experience or because you haven’t made it easy for them to do so. Priming the pump with email and social media content makes it easy for customers to share your information with others.

Not closing enough of your leads?

Most likely this is a customer experience problem. If price is playing a greater role than you think it should, better content that helps consumers understand your value can greatly increase percentage closes.

There are several possibilities here and most of them aren’t good. In order to get to the bottom of this, you’ll need to talk to customers to find out why. Problems could be related to pricing, customer experience or could be simply that you don’t ask them to come back.
